BridgeLux and Intematix Announce Industry Alliance

BridgeLux, Inc. (formerly eLite Optoelectronics), a leading supplier of energy saving, power-LED chips to high-volume solid state lighting market segments, and the Intematix Corp., a leader in high performance LED phosphors, today jointly announced the formation of the Intellectual Property Secure Lighting Alliance (IPSLA). IPSLA is a network of solid state lighting component suppliers who believe that respecting intellectual property is essential to accelerating the adoption of solid state lighting. Solid state lighting (SSL) is a key component in a larger technology trend that will help to reduce worldwide energy consumption and conserve our planet’s valuable natural resources.

BridgeLux and Intematix founded the alliance on the core value that the companies in IPSLA respect and do not infringe on existing intellectual property.  Conformance to IPSLA’s guiding standards will enable emerging, innovative LED packaging and module integration companies to more rapidly penetrate high volume lighting market segments worldwide. IPSLA members are required to certify that qualified patent attorneys have reviewed their products and processes, with reference to existing IP, and found them to be non-infringing at all levels.

BridgeLux and Intematix are hosting an IPSLA introductory workshop for high brightness LED suppliers and packaging companies at the Ambassador Hotel in Hsinchu, Taiwan at this year’s Solid State Lighting Suppliers Forum, SSLS/Blue 2006, on the morning of May 9.  Interested parties may obtain an invitation by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

“We’re pleased to see the start of a rapid and widespread acceptance of IPSLA by vendors at all levels of the solid state lighting industry supply chain,” notes BridgeLux CEO Dr. Robert Walker, “This association represents an acknowledgement not only that intellectual property rights should to be honored on a worldwide basis, but that as we do so, we actually spur increased innovation and quality across the industry. It’s simply stated in the adage that the most rapid growth of a technology comes from competition, not oligarchies and from invention, not infringement.”

According to Intematix VP of Engineering and Co-Founder, Dr. Yi Qun Li, “Intematix has rapidly built a strong IP portfolio of blue, green, yellow orange and red phosphors, which can be excited by either blue, or UV LEDs. IPSLA becomes a strong mechanism to allow complimentary, IP-secure products to come together, with Intematix phosphors and BridgeLux power-LEDs being one example.” He continued, “While LED chip packagers are coming to understand that there are IP-secure and patent-protected merchant alternatives for such things as phosphors and power LED chips, we see IPSLA as a mechanism that really helps to take the packager’s story out to their customers. This alliance is a means to both provide security and open up additional supplier opportunities to the module integrators.”

Previously companies that developed modules and fixtures that incorporate SSL solutions have either been constrained to choosing from a limited set of sources for LED chips, phosphors and packaged devices, or were exposing themselves to the consequences of using potentially infringing products. IPSLA works to provide those integrators with a readily available merchant network of components, materials and solutions providers that have done their due diligence so that the customer doesn’t have to.

Dr. Walker added, “Solid state lighting does not need to be limited to niche applications, but is capable of addressing many opportunities in general lighting right now. The doorway to wider acceptance will be opened by encouraging vigorous competition and joining with HB-LED packagers to offer module integrators and lighting manufacturers patent-backed sources for their SSL technology.”
