Standardization of Performance Criteria for LED Luminaires
This guiding paper is intended to help bring clarity by introducing a universal set of quality criteria that are recently described in two IEC/PAS documents. As a user of LED luminaires it is important to apply the same set of standardised and therefore comparable quality criteria when evaluating manufacturer’s claims. Users of LED luminaires should always ask for LED luminaire specifications measured in compliance with the new IEC/PAS documents. Read more »
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) Introduces New LED Package Component Recognition Program
UL is committed to advancing and innovating safety, providing certainty to more people, businesses and governments. As a technical leader in Solid State and LED Lighting technologies, UL has created a Component Recognition program for LED packages under the Category Control Number (CCN) OOQL2 (LED Packages – Component). A parallel category, OOQL8, provides certification for Canada.

On the Standardization of Thermal Characterization of LEDs
Unlike two decades ago in the IC world, the junction temperature (Tj) of an LED is not just a performance indicator of the thermal design but also plays a major role in lighting design since many properties of the light output of an LED depend on the absolute junction temperature. This means that thermal management should be an integral part of the system design of an LED based lighting solution, resulting in changing roles of different engineering disciplines in the overall design process - as ...

Solid State Lighting for Incandescent Replacement—Best Practices for Dimming
This paper focuses on integrated LED lamps intended for replacement of general service incandescent lamps. Future white papers are planned to address other LED dimming topics, such as: color change; light output and efficiency (dimming curve); dimming protocols (Internet protocols, 0-10); LED modules with auxiliary drivers; and control architectures that dim without modulated power.
