CIE Announces Two New Publications on Human Skin Colour Measurement and Light Pollution

The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) is pleased to announce the release of two significant new publications that advance the understanding and standardization of light and colour in human and environmental contexts.

CIE 256:2025 – Measurement of Human Skin Colour

This landmark report provides an authoritative framework for the standardized and reproducible measurement of human skin colour. Developed by CIE Technical Committee 1-92, the publication establishes a harmonized methodological foundation for evaluating, comparing, and reproducing skin colour across scientific, medical, and industrial fields.

Particularly notable is the report’s comprehensive treatment of measurement uncertainty and protocol consistency, addressing key variables such as instrumentation, illumination geometry, body location, and individual diversity. Together, these elements ensure that measurements are reliable, comparable, and scientifically robust — offering a critical reference for applications ranging from dermatology and imaging to cosmetics and colour technology.

CIE PS 003:2025 – CIE Position Statement on Obtrusive Light and Light Pollution (1st Edition)

Building on CIE’s ongoing work in light and the environment, this Position Statement focuses on achieving a balance between the benefits of nighttime lighting and the need to minimise its adverse effects. The document summarises the current state of knowledge, outlines best practices for mitigating obtrusive light, and identifies key areas where further research is needed to guide sustainable and responsible lighting design.
