Sensity Systems Delivers World’s First Light Sensory Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--Sensity Systems Inc. today announced the world’s first Light Sensory Network (LSN): a new class of digital sensor network that takes advantage of LED lighting conversions to help light owners enhance energy efficiency while transforming their luminaires into strategic assets. To create LSNs, Sensity provides networked LED luminaires and retrofit kits that replace high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures.

“Our trials with Sensity’s NetSense have shown that SensApps security and surveillance applications work perfectly as a part of the platform—and we expect to roll them out to other of our facilities in the future.”

LSNs turn LED luminaires into networked, sensor-equipped, solid-state, smart devices capable of capturing and transmitting sensory big data from the surrounding environment into a variety of applications and services, such as public safety, weather monitoring, parking management and retail analytics. Each luminaire becomes a node in a powerful, broadband, carrier-grade network that can provide valuable services for light owners.

“By combining energy-efficient LED lighting with the first true multiservice platform, the Light Sensory Network promises to be the next platform for global innovation,” said Hugh Martin, chairman and CEO of Sensity Systems. “While all the individual components of the platform have been available before, Sensity is the first company that put everything together—all the relevant technology expertise, process integration know-how and strong partnerships—to make the LSN a reality. And we’re delivering an LSN platform to light owners as an easy-to-implement, fully integrated, turnkey package.”

NetSense: Sensity Systems’ Light Sensory Network Platform
Sensity’s NetSense platform, the first commercially available instantiation of the LSN, integrates LED lighting, sensors, high-speed networking, cloud computing and big data analytics into a single, MultiService Platform (MSP) with distributed intelligence.

In Sensity’s advanced distributed computing architecture, each LED luminaire is equipped with sensors and a fully functioning processor able to run software instructions. When networked together, these luminaires collectively gather and process data about the surrounding environment, enabling analytics that transform the raw data into actionable information. The networked LED luminaires also deliver huge energy savings—approximately 80 percent with LED lighting alone and approximately 90 percent with LED lighting plus networking, compared to fluorescent or HID lighting—for a faster return on investment.

The NetSense platform allows owners of area or industrial lighting to capitalize on a number of current trends and opportunities. Forecasts predict that LEDs will capture 45 percent of the global lighting market by 2016. In addition, industry analyst firm Gartner has indicated that one of the ten strategic technology trends for 2013 will be the “Internet of Things”: the networked interconnection of everyday physical objects—from kitchen appliances to lighting fixtures—to one another using embedded sensors and recognition technology.

“Cities and towns everywhere tell us they’re looking for ways to lower their energy costs and at the same time provide services more efficiently,” said Jim Davis, president of Chevron Energy Solutions, a Sensity partner targeting municipals for Light Sensory Network deployments. “Sensity offers a way for cities to both cut their energy use and build an innovative information network to make their services more efficient, and we are excited about the opportunity to explore these possibilities together.”

Sensity has already begun working with several partners and third-party developers eager to create innovative SensApps applications and services that run on NetSense. These SensApps applications and services include lighting control, power monitoring, lighting maintenance, network monitoring, parking management, security, asset management and retail analytics.

Sensity Systems Luminaries
Light Sensory Networks are ideal for corporate campuses, retail, commercial real estate, municipalities, warehousing and distribution, education and horticulture environments.

“Office buildings consume tremendous amounts of energy, so conversion to LED lighting makes tremendous sense for our properties. Adding centralized, automated management and control of not only the lighting, but also security and other features of our properties, will further enhance the efficiency gains,” said Stan Roualdes, executive vice president, Property Management and Construction Services for Shorenstein, one of the country’s oldest and most respected real estate organizations. “Our trials with Sensity’s NetSense have shown that SensApps security and surveillance applications work perfectly as a part of the platform—and we expect to roll them out to other of our facilities in the future.”

Sensity will be at LIGHTFAIR International, the world’s largest, annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show, on April 23-25 in Philadelphia. Sensity will showcase its latest lighting solutions in Booth #3869, Halls A-E (200 Level), of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

About Sensity Systems
Since its inception, Sensity Systems’ vision has been shaped by a team that consists of experienced engineers from the optical arena, lighting, networking and telecom sectors, including Chairman and CEO Hugh Martin, a Silicon Valley veteran and visionary; Rusty Cumpston, co-founder and chief operating officer; and Rao Arimilli, co-founder and chief strategy officer.

Sensity Systems uses energy-efficient LED lighting as the foundation for a high-speed, sensor-based Light Sensory Network (LSN). The company enables light owners to capitalize on the LED conversion process by embedding networking technology within both retrofit and new LED luminaires. With Sensity’s open, multiservice NetSense platform, lighting owners are able to reduce energy costs and implement a variety of SensApps applications and services over the network, including public safety, environmental and weather monitoring, parking management and retail analytics.
