LuxLive 2015: See the Very Latest in Lighting Innovation

The latest technology, the best projects and finest experts will be at LuxLive, Europe’s biggest annual lighting event, on 18-19 November at London’s ExCeL. Not only will this year’s exhibition be the biggest ever, with more than 300 exhibitors, it’ll also feature more than 80 hours of free-to-attend talks, debates and panel discussions.

It will be an unrivalled showcase of the best the industry can offer in terms of technology: the best lamps, state-of-the-art luminaires and sophisticated controls systems, representing the entire industry supply chain.

The programme will be streamed for all the key sectors which are feeling the effects of LEDs:  retail, hospitality, healthcare, education, commercial, transport and rail, street lighting and industrial as well as technical streams and general industry update sessions.  So whatever your interest, you’ll be able to gain insights from specialist experts.

As you'd expect, the big names will be out in force and will have a massive presence at the show, which is expected to attract more than 8,000 visitors, from 52 countries, this year. More than 300 exhibitors will be showcasing something for every lighting application. So for instance, if you're interested in LED replacement lamps, check out Aurora, British Electric Lamps, Verbatim and Kosnic. For wireless controls, visit Rako, Helvar and Harvard. For streetlighting and outdoor innovations, there’s Abacus, Holophane, CU Phosco, DW Windsor, Harvard, Kingfisher and Orange Tek. Emergency lighting is covered by Emergi-Lite, Dextra, Tamlite and Thorlux.

LuxLive is widely regarded as the place to source the very latest in lighting technology and this year is no exception. Here we select just a few of the innovations which you can expect to see.

iGuzzini’s tiny Laser downlight

Ranging from just 17mm to 75mm in diameter, the Laser is designed to discreetly and elegantly illuminate retail, hospitality and residential applications. For visual comfort, glare is kept low with a unified glare rating (UGR) of less than 15. There’s even a warm-dim version that reproduces the dimming of a halogen source, bringing back the magic of the past when less light meant warmth and softness. And it’s available with fixed, adjustable or wallwasher optics. See it for yourself on iGuzzini’s stand, P15.

The tough new fitting from Dextra

Dextra’s new Torrent is a luminaire designed to last. It’s an LED solution capable of operating at up to 50°C, with an IP65 rating and smooth curved design minimising the risk of dirt accumulating. The Torrent is constructed with die-cast aluminium end caps and an extruded aluminium heatsink, with a high transmission opal diffuser. The LED source not only provides excellent energy efficiency but also eliminates glass and mercury. See Torrent and loads of other new products from Dextra at stand H33, right next to the Lux Arena.

The quantum dot LED light

Quantum dots just might be the next revolution in lighting. These tiny crystals of semiconductor material play the same role as phosphors in LED lighting – converting blue light to different colours. The difference is, quantum dots allow you to fine-tune the colour of light like never before. For applications where colour quality is crucial (retail, galleries, horticulture…), this changes everything. At LuxLive, Marl will be showing off the Orion QD, the first in a range of products it has developed in partnership with quantum dot specialist Nanoco. Come and see it for yourself at stand K26.

For designer luminaires, visitors will able to make a beeline for lightspace dot london.  A new event co-located with LuxLive, lightspace will bring together leading thinkers, including architects, and lighting designers to explore how lighting can help reinterpret the built environment.  It will feature two days of inspirational speakers alongside a curated exhibition featuring innovations from the leading lighting marques including iGuzzini and Zumtobel.

Visitors to LuxLive will be able to access a rolling programme of more than 80 sessions so whatever time you rock up, there’ll be something engaging and interactive.  Lighting experts will be lifting the lid on hot-button topics such as the possibilities of intelligent lighting and the ‘internet of things’ – should we believe the hype?  There will be an under-the-bonnet look at exemplar projects such as Tesco’s massive LED rollout, how Wahaca’s new lighting is helping boost the brand of this Mexican restaurant chain and a look at why one London hospital is investing £1 million in new lighting.

There will be sessions on financing lighting projects as well as a look at the government's plan for procuring outdoor lighting.  There will be practical talks such as ‘10 things I wish I'd known before starting my LED rollout’ and warranties on lighting products: how not to fall through the loopholes.  There’s fun stuff too, in the shape of Dragons’ Den, the Cool Wall and Lamps Behaving Badly!  Have you ever tried dimming LEDs? It's pretty hit and miss. So, Lux’s experts will be connecting a mixed bag of light sources, dimmers and transformers, to see what happens!

A new and exclusive feature at LuxLive will be the Internet of Things experience, bringing you a chance to see how the world of lighting and big data are set to merge and start another revolution in lighting. See what this means for your business and how it is going to drive customer engagement and service provision. From retail to healthcare, transport to residential the IoT experience is a must see feature.

Struggling for time? Worry not, LuxLive 2015 will have its door wide open until 9pm on the first day – Wednesday 18 November.  So, there’s no excuse for not attending and, better still, plenty of reasons to attend!  Exhibitors will be hosting drinks parties on their stands and the programme of lively interactive sessions will continue to the bitter end.
