PerfectWhite: Luminus’ Latest Spectrally Tuned COB
PerfectWhite: Luminus’ Latest Spectrally Tuned COB Spectrally tuned sources are the essential components of human-centric lighting and Luminus PerfectWhite is it’s newest source, joining the Sensus and AccuWhite products, that has been purpose-designed and improves upon the light from conventional sources. PerfectWhite™, which closely replicates the visual characteristics of halogen lamps (3000 K) was preferred by lighting designers in testing at both Light + Building and Lightfair. Though the spectrums are a virtual match – Luminus filled the cyan gap – PerfectWhite’s color point is slightly below the black body locus and as a result, there’s no green/yellow tint that is common to halogen. A better halogen has long been a wish of the lighting design community and PerfectWhite delivers without infra-red, without green/yellow tint, and without ultraviolet radiation. Read more »

A Near Infrared Enhanced LED Lighting Approach
A Near Infrared Enhanced LED Lighting Approach With the evolution of LED lighting, one topic has come more and more in the focus of the lighting industry: Human Centric Lighting (HCL). While HCL is not clearly defined, a common understanding is that this is light and lighting that supports health and the well-being of humans. Some new proposals are going beyond the approach of providing just visible light in adequate quality, but also to providing invisible radiation, UV and/or NIR that support health and well-being. Some research and the evolution of humans show clear evidence for positive effects of this kind of illumination. Scott Zimmerman, CEO at Silas, presents a new approach that adds NIR radiation to LED illumination. He explains the background of this idea, how it also improves the quality of visible light and discusses the health benefits. Read more »

New LRC Study Tests the Impact of Circadian Light on Alertness in Office Workers
New LRC Study Tests the Impact of Circadian Light on Alertness in Office Workers In 2017 the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute published a groundbreaking study showing that office workers who receive a robust dose of circadian-effective light experience better sleep, and lower levels of depression and stress, than those who spend their days in dim or low light levels. The team of LRC researchers, led by Dr. Mariana Figueiro and sponsored by the U.S. General Services Administration, measured existing light levels for 109 participants at five federal office buildings designed to maximize daylight availability indoors. The research team found that even in open offices with many, large windows, office workers were not receiving enough light to stimulate their circadian system during the day, due to factors such as season, cloud cover, desk orientation, and window shade position. Warm Dimming and the Future of LED
Warm Dimming and the Future of LED As LED lighting grows in acceptance and popularity, so does the need for better and more ranging color quality. Traditionally, LED lighting gave off a stark white, cool glow that was harsh on the eyes and made it difficult to use as a primary lighting source. Warm-dim LED technology has toned down that cool coloring, dynamically shifting the current and future applications of LED lighting management systems. Dimmability with a warm glow effect creates more opportunities than ever for LED lighting management systems. Read more »

Joint Position Paper by LightingEurope and the IALD on Human Centric Lighting
Joint Position Paper by LightingEurope and the IALD on Human Centric Lighting Light has been known for a long time to enable sight, safety and orientation. However, light is not limited to facilitate vision, it has the potential to achieve far more than this. Science has shown that light facilitates powerful non-visual effects on humans. Light has the ability to improve cognitive performance, it can energize, increase alertness or ease relaxation. It can improve mood, as well as stabilize the sleep-wake cycle of people. Therefore, it can be understood that light impacts people’s wellbeing and performance. In fact, the true value of light lies in the combination of excellent visual, biological and emotional effects of light. LightingEurope uses the terminology “Human Centric Lighting” for lighting that brings such benefits to the users. A product or system can only be “Human Centric” within the context of people, time and space, thus within a specific application. Therefore, Human Centric Lighting requires the integration of these effects in the lighting design. Read more »
