CIE Workshop on Future Topics in Road Lighting

The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) will hold the workshop “Future Topics in Road Lighting” on 13–14 October 2026 in Torino, Italy, in conjunction with the annual meeting of CIE Division 4: Transportation and Exterior Applications (14–15 October 2026). The event is organised in collaboration with the Italian National Committee of the CIE, the Italian Association of Lighting Manufacturers (ASSIL), and the Italian Lighting Association (AIDI), and is hosted by the National Metrology Institute of Italy (INRiM) in Torino.

CONTEXT AND CONTRIBUTION TO CIE WORK

The workshop provides an opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of CIE Division 4 strategic work plans and the planned revision of key CIE publications in the field of road and urban lighting, in view of new knowledge and trends such as smart cities, augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI) and inclusive lighting. In particular, it will support early discussions around the revision of CIE 115:2010 Lighting of Roads for Motor and Pedestrian Traffic, 2nd Edition, which forms the basis for many national and regional road lighting standards worldwide, including those adopted across Europe. In addition, the workshop will address related foundational documents such as CIE 093-1992 Road Lighting as an Accident Countermeasure and CIE 100-1992 Fundamentals of Road Lighting , closely related CIE 140:2019 Road Lighting Calculations, 2nd Edition, as well as earlier Technical Reports including CIE 136-2000 Guide to the Lighting of Urban Areas, and CIE 032-1977 Lighting in Situations Requiring Special Treatment. By explicitly referencing these documents, the workshop aims to connect current practice with future CIE work and highlight the broader framework in which road lighting guidance is developed.

While the formal revision work will take place within CIE Technical Committees, this workshop serves as a starting point for discussion, exchange, and community engagement. It brings together experts, researchers, and professionals in road and outdoor lighting — both those already involved in CIE activities and those working with standards derived from CIE recommendations without direct involvement.

Participants will have the opportunity to contribute insights on emerging topics — such as grazing and adaptive road lighting, ecological impact of artificial lighting — while engaging with the CIE Division 4 network to shape the future directions in transportation and exterior lighting applications. Experts, researchers, and professionals in road and outdoor lighting are invited to join the workshop and engage in these discussions. The event is designed to foster open exchange among chairs, invited speakers, and participants (including dedicated student opportunities), with the goal of gathering valuable input to support CIE Division 4 in developing its strategic roadmap.

SCHEDULE AND KEY TOPICS

The workshop will address key themes and cross-disciplinary aspects expected to shape the future of road lighting, including:

  • Adaptive lighting systems
  • Road surface characterization of current road surfaces
  • The illuminated road environment for all users
  • Obtrusive and ecological lighting impacts
  • Challenges related to autonomous and assisted vehicle sensors
  • Emerging recommendations and new calculation approaches for road lighting

Ample time will be devoted to interactive discussions and a panel session featuring a SWOT analysis of current and emerging road lighting topics.

The workshop schedule (from October 13th lunchtime to October 14th lunchtime) has been designed to optimise travel logistics, minimising overnight stays for participants attending both the workshop and the subsequent CIE meetings.

CIE DIVISION 4 ANNUAL MEETING AND TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MEETINGS

Following the workshop, CIE Division 4 and its Technical Committee meetings will take place at the same venue from 14 to 15 October. These meetings are scheduled to conclude on the afternoon of 15 October, by 13:30 local time. This section is intended for participants of the Division 4 network, chairs, and committee members, and will focus on ongoing and planned CIE activities in transportation and exterior applications.

The workshop programme and the schedule of technical meetings can be found on the official website of the workshop.

SOCIAL EVENTS

Beyond the technical programme, the workshop offers exclusive networking opportunities through social events hosted in distinctive venues across Torino, providing a welcoming setting to connect with peers while experiencing the city’s rich heritage, local cuisine, and renowned traditions:

  • 13 October | Workshop Dinner “Future Topics in Road Lighting”
  • 14 October | TC 4-11 – Division 4 Key Issues at Famous Casa Martini

REGISTRATION

The workshop is subject to a registration fee, which includes the social dinner on October 13. Meetings of Division 4 and the Technical Committees are free of charge. The Casa Martini experience, scheduled for October 14, will be available for an additional fee.
