The World Economic Forum Has Recognized SemiLEDs Corporation as a 2009 Technology Pioneer

SemiLEDs is the world first company that mass produces High Power Light Emitting Diode (HPLED) on flexible Copper alloy base in large volumes at high brightness efficiency (>100lumens/watt), reliability and low cost, which makes the solid-state lighting (SSL) becoming possible for the mass: bringing low cost SSL to the unlighted areas of the Globe.

SemiLEDs is continuing to innovate using its differentiated metal alloy technology to bring also Ultra-Violet (UVA) HPLED used for sterilization that will have deep impact on people life in the rural areas.
The World Economic Forum has selected 34 visionary companies as Technology Pioneers 2009 for their accomplishments as innovators of the highest caliber, and whose technologies will have a deep impact on business and society. To be selected as a Technology Pioneer, a company must be involved in the development of life-changing technology innovation and have the potential for long-term impact on business and society. In addition, it must demonstrate visionary leadership, show all the signs of being along-standing market leader and its technology must be proven. .SemiLEDs is named in the sector Energy/Environment for the contribution of high efficiency and low cost breakthrough technology for Light Emitting Diodes (LED) used for Solid State Lighting.
World-wide crises in energy and global warming make clear that energy saving is extremely important. As the World will phase out incandescent light bulbs in a few years, Solid State Lighting is a viable alternative. SemiLEDs has been a pioneer in Vertical LED on metal alloy technology in conjunction with a large scale, large wafer platform used in the semiconductor industry. SemiLEDs’ technology proves that an energy saving for more than 50% for commercial, public and residential lighting is achievable at the cost similar to conventional light sources. 20% of the world’s electricity is now used for lighting, and SemiLEDs’ solution can make a huge difference in reducing that consumption, leading to a reduction of carbon dioxide, the element responsible for global warming.
“it is an honor to be one of only 34 companies recognized and selected by The World Economic Forum as Technology Pioneer” said Trung Doan, SemiLEDs Chief Executive Officer. “By enabling low cost Solid Sate Lighting, we will conserve the world energy resources to fight global warming and preserve our environment for the coming generations. Most of all, the un-lighted region will be reached by SemiLEDs’ low cost SSL lighting solutions to improve people life”.
About SemiLEDs:
SemiLEDs Corporation is the only mass producer of metal-base LED chips in the world.  It designs, develops, manufactures and sells high brightness light emitting diodes (HBLED) using proprietary technologies to enable high performance (120lumens/watt) and cost effective solid state lighting solutions; it also manufactures UVA HBLED products (365nm, 395nm, 405nm) at optical power output up to 350mW per mm2. SemiLEDs is a U.S. corporation, with offices in Boise, Idaho and manufacturing operations in Hsinchu Science Park, Taiwan.  For additional information, please visit
