Day of Photonics on 21 October, Just Around the Corner

DAY OF PHOTONICS is almost there, and over 100 companies will participate in this inaugural edition. On 21 October 1983, the General Conference of Weights And Measures adopted the value of 299,792.458 km/s for the speed of light. At the occasion of the anniversary, organizations in more than 30 countries organize all types of activities, from internal meetings, outreaches to schools, to opening their doors to the general public. DAY OF PHOTONICS is the ideal excuse to promote ‘photonics’, and the timing makes it ideally suited as a preliminary to the International Year of Light in 2015.

What is happening concretely on 21 October? As an example of an event reaching out to the general public, the visit to Casa Batlló, a culturally and architecturally important building in Barcelona, Spain.  This building was designed by the famous architect Antonio Gaudi, who took his inspiration from natural organic forms.  It has the most colourful facade which appears to change colour throughout the whole day depending on ambient light conditions.  Gaudi knew this and he actually stated: “Light achieves maximum harmony at an inclination of 45°, since it resides on objects in a way that is neither horizontal nor vertical. This can be considered medium light, and it offers the most perfect vision of objects and their most exquisite nuances. It is the Mediterranean light.” This activity, organized by RADIANTIS, was chosen because this change of colour resembles the broad tunability of their optical parametric oscillators across the visible and IR spectra. Other activities planned include internal company meetings to discuss the business opportunities in photonics, volunteers organizing visits to local schools and make an introduction to photonics, organizations that invite children to see the work environment of their parents – a so-called family day! Photonics encompasses all forms of technologies from photovoltaic, lighting, lasers, .. for applications in communication, entertainment, medical, manufacturing, automotive, energy, lighting, agriculture, energy, security, art, ... Also those working in industry are not necessarily aware of the breadth of applications of photonics. If you have not seen it yet, check-out this video “Photonics technologies are everywhere!”
