ROHM Presents the Industry’s Smallest Surface Mount LEDs with Aspherical Lens

Willich-Munchheide/Germany, August 20th, 2013 - ROHM Semiconductor recently announced the development of compact, high-output surface mount LEDs with lens optimized for lighting for autofocus operation in digital cameras and camera-equipped devices. Original device processing technology and optical design result in the industry’s thinnest, smallest form factor, reducing mounting area and height over conventional products by 65% and 30%, respectively.

In recent years there is a growing demand for smaller, higher performance digital cameras and portable devices equipped with cameras, which in turn requires thinner, more compact electrical components. In addition, with added functionality comes an increase in current, which brings a need for lower power consumption.

On the other hand, a sufficient amount of light is required from the LED for correct focusing of the subject, making it difficult to reduce the size and thickness, making hemispherical lens LEDs the mainstream choice. In response, ROHM designed the CSL701/801 series utilizing an optical design based on a smaller light-emitting element and CAE (Computer Aided Engineering), along with an aspherical lens developed through proprietary molding technology, resulting in the industry’s smallest (2924 size: 2.9mmx2.4mm) surface mount aspherical lens LEDs. Additionally, improved heat dissipation characteristics make it possible to reduce size while enabling high output. Lower current consumption is also provided at the same luminosity compared with conventional products and an optical axis deviation of only ±3% delivers sufficient lighting even for objects far away.

Key Features:
•    Ultra-compact size significantly reduces mounting area
•    High output capability contributes to lower power consumption
•    Narrow directivity results in superior straightness
•    Surface-mount side-view type also available

ROHM’s top-view surface-mount LEDs with aspherical lens are among the smallest in the industry, measuring just 2.9mmx2.4mm. The result is a 65% smaller mounting area and 30% less thickness than conventional products. High output is possible in a compact form factor, along with lower current consumption. For example, for a luminosity of 50cd current can be reduced by 25%. Ultra-narrow directivity, combined with an optical axis deviation of only ±3°, make high-precision autofocus possible. Select between top-view (CSL0701) and side-view (CSL801) configurations based on set requirements.
