Modularization of Automotive Light Sources Lowers Costs, Improves Repairability and Sustainability

Adoption of LED technology for headlamps in the global automotive market has reached full maturity with adoption approaching the 80% mark. While most designs have deployed custom engineered light engines with car platform specific solutions, Lumileds has led a movement to modular light engines for headlamps that are expected to represent 50% of the solutions on the road and in design by 2027. The approach, pioneered by Lumileds, benefits auto manufacturers and consumers alike: system design is faster, supply chain is simplified, repair and replace costs are lowered, and headlamp light engines become recyclable and more sustainable.

“LED headlamp replacement costs are often in the thousands of dollars, representing as much as 8% or more of the car value based on MSRP value. Regulations, UN ECE R148, allow for replaceable light sources. Our LUXEON Go module can be designed into both reflector and projection headlighting applications today, speeding the time to market, reducing costs, and benefiting consumers with lower repair costs for a sustainable solution.” according to Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Schiene, Director Product Management, Auto LED Solutions – Headlighting.

Modular Options for All Exterior Lighting
Lumileds has developed modular solutions for all the exterior lighting applications around a
vehicle. LUXEON LxN regulated “bulbs” offer hassle-free design-in that saves on system costs and shortens time to market. With multiple performance and color options, LxN regulated bulbs are deployed for fog, turn, stop, and tail lighting.

The LUXEON Go portfolio combines compactness, high precision, and superior thermal management in solutions for high and low beam headlighting, static bending light, and front fog applications in addition to supporting both reflector and projection headlighting. The new LUXEON Go S brings the same benefits to 2-wheel and very compact 4-wheel vehicles.

LUXEON MxN modules are designed for adaptive driving beam (ADB), high and low beam, spot lighting, daytime running lights, and front turn, signal, and hazard lighting. The highly efficient systems with superior intensity and contrast feature individually addressable LEDs flexible configurations, and precise placement tolerance in 3-dimensions.
