Opto Taiwan 2008: IRTI showcasing new LED technologies and products

Taiwan`s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is showcasing several new LED technologies and products at the Opto Taiwan 2008 optoelectronics trade show.

Among the various products and technology that ITRI is displaying at the show is a large-size LED backlight unit (BLU) that does not require an AC-DC converter. The BLU`s design increases heat dissipation area by 10 times and can resolve the heat dissipation issues of traditional LED lamps. The BLU also has a 10-15% power savings over conventional LED-based BLUs that require a converter and can decrease the price of LED-based BLUs to within 1.6 times that of CCFL-based ones. ITRI estimates that mass production of the AC LED BLU will begin in the first half of 2009.

ITRI began to collaborate with LED players in AC LED technology from 2006, with 50lm/W AC LEDs starting to be mass produced in the second quarter of this year for use in reading and night lights. ITRI is also showcasing its LED medical lights for surgical and dental use that helps maintain a low temperature for wounds. Products based on the technology will appear in early 2009, according to the institute.

Also on display by ITRI is a 42-inch autostereoscopic display which allows for viewing of 3D images for up to four meters with a viewing angle of up to 80 degrees without the need for special glasses.

ITRI`s large size R2R monochrome Ch-LCD is showing for the first time at Opto 2008. This LCD is based on roll-to-roll manufacturing technology with monochrome cholesteric liquid crystals and offers high resolutions and fast refresh rates, according to ITRI. IRTI also indicated that the monochrome Ch-LCD would be commercialized by year-end and that a chromatic Ch-LCD would be introduced in the second half of the year.
