TIR surpasses milestone of 100 patent filings: TIR'S Leadership in SSL technology creates demand for speaking engagements and technical papers

Vancouver, BC – TIR Systems Ltd. (TSX: TIR), announces that as of August 1, the company has 113 patent applications in addition to six patents already granted in the field of Solid State Lighting (SSL).

This extensive intellectual property portfolio supports in excess of 60 separate inventions that cover the entire range of technologies required to successfully commercialize SSL systems.

TIR’s portfolio includes a strategically diversified array of technologies that addresses:

• LED Drive • Control
• LED Package Design • Communications
• Thermal Management • LED Measurement Equipment
• Intelligent Feedback • Systems Integration
• Optical Systems

TIR’s Lexel™ technology, for which TIR has signed seven development agreements with its light fixture manufacturing partners in Europe, North America and Japan, incorporates all of these component technologies while several of the inventions have potential application in fields outside of lighting.

“Reaching this milestone is a monumental achievement for the company and demonstrates that the focused R&D investment program that the company embarked on to develop Lexel is delivering results,” said Leonard Hordyk, President and CEO of TIR Systems Ltd. “We believe that we have the fastest-growing and highest-quality intellectual property portfolio in the field of Solid State Lighting, positioning us very well to support our partners as we work together to establish a new standard in lighting,” added Hordyk.

The depth and quality of TIR’s intellectual property portfolio has also placed its research team in high demand. Fresh from a speaking engagement at the International Optical Design Conference (IODC), sponsored by the two leading scientific research organizations in the field of LEDs, Ian Ashdown, TIR’s Senior Research Scientist will be co-chairing the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE) Solid State Lighting Conference in San Diego on August 13-17. In addition, TIR will be presenting five papers on its Lexel technology at the conference, currently the most prestigious worldwide gathering of SSL researchers in the world. SPIE will also be including a chapter on LED photometry authored by Mr. Ashdown in its forthcoming book, titled “Solid State Lighting and Illumination Engineering.”

Four members of TIR’s research team were recently recognized with an Excellence in Technical Communications award for co-authoring an article in Laser Focus World’s May 2006 issue titled “White Light LEDs Range from Warm to Cool”. With a circulation of 70,000, Laser Focus World magazine serves the global technical marketplace working on the leading edge of SSL development.

Brent York, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of TIR Systems states, “In addition to participation on a variety of technical committees, such as the International Lighting Commission (CIE), the Illuminating Engineering Society
of North America (IESNA), and SPIE, there is increasing demand for the TIR Research team to speak about the groundbreaking technology that we have developed. I attribute this growing interest to the strength of our intellectual property portfolio and our ability to effectively communicate with both lighting and semi-conductor audiences.”

About Lexel™
The Lexel is a perfectly controllable new solid state light source incorporating light emitting diodes (LEDs) that has the potential to use up to 80% less energy to produce the same amount of light as a conventional light source and does not degrade its output or color temperature over its 50,000 hour life. Lexel combines breakthroughs in thermal design, optics, and feedback to provide precise color temperature control and dimming in a cost effective design, resulting in a truly intelligent light source for illumination.
About TIR Systems Ltd.
TIR Systems Ltd., a world leader in light enabling technology, is building the foundations for tomorrow’s lighting. TIR developed the Lexel™, which is the first, fully integrated, Light Emitting Diode (LED) based light source, designed specifically to produce high quality white light essential for general lighting applications. The benefits of the Lexel technology will encourage a more rapid adoption of Solid State Lighting and the Lexel is positioned to become a new standard in the global lighting market.
