Luminus devices announces issuance of core patents covering photonic lattice technology

Woburn, Massachusetts, Luminus Devices, Inc. today announced that it has received six major U.S. patents for its PhlatLight™ (Photonic Lattice Light Source) technology.

Luminus has filed over 100 additional U.S. and international patent applications, many of which have been allowed and are expected to be issued later this year.

Leveraging its expertise in photonic lattice physics, Luminus has invented and engineered Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) capable of delivering substantially more light than traditional LEDs. Ordinary LEDs are small and have limited brightness, because their efficiency degrades as they increase in size. Luminus’ PhlatLight LEDs utilize a unique pattern called a photonic lattice that allows them to be made arbitrarily large without sacrificing performance, enabling more powerful solid light sources than have ever been realized to date.

Having invested more than $10 million in IP development, Luminus’ portfolio now provides broad coverage for large area, patterned LEDs in the areas of design, applications and advanced manufacturing methods. This includes the cost-effective creation of photonic lattices, a key ingredient for producing PhlatLight chipsets in high volume. While Luminus is currently manufacturing PhlatLight LEDs for large screen high-definition displays, the underlying PhlatLight technology can be applied to many other LED applications.
“There are unlimited opportunities for LEDs using photonic lattice technology today and in the future,” said Alexei Erchak, co-founder and chief technology officer for Luminus Devices, Inc. “Luminus will continue enabling our customers with new solid-state lighting solutions through our core manufacturing business, and will also support other LED applications through collaborations and licensing agreements.”

About Luminus Devices
Luminus Devices, Inc., headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, develops and manufactures high performance solid state light emitting devices and systems. Its PhlatLight (Photonic Lattice) technology, developed by Luminus Devices based on research done at MIT, is the only solid state light source powerful enough to illuminate large screen projection televisions. With PhlatLight chipsets in commercial production, Luminus is leading the industry in designing this new, powerful light source for a variety of applications, including microdisplay projection TVs and other advanced, high-definition displays. Several leading television and consumer electronics vendors are currently selling TVs with PhlatLight products. For more information, visit www.luminus.com.
