Out of Bounds – Design Contest

Unprecedented freedom to design with Seoul Semiconductor’s Acrich LED technology: The LED manufacturer, Seoul Semiconductor, recently launched the next generation of Acrich based products – Acrich3. Compared to the previous generation the LED series has been significantly enhanced and has positioned itself in the area of “Smart Lighting”.

To highlight the advantages of this technology to their customers, Seoul Semiconductor is organizing a luminaire design contest this year in collaboration with the University of Applied Sciences Munich and the Department of Design. Seventeen design students embark on an exceptional 4-month-long journey during which they get to experiment with Acrich modules as a light source and discover what’s possible in lighting design when the traditional barriers of LEDs are eliminated. The ultimate goal is to come up with unexpected and distinctive ideas and possible solutions that clearly point out the Acrich technology’s USP – die possibility to operate LED solutions without an AC/DC converter directly from the mains. The challenges the students face and the solutions they come up with can be followed under www.seoul-be-bright.com/contest.

At the end of the semester a jury will award the three best designs. Apart from representatives from industrial design, the media landscape and the LED industry, Ingo Maurer has also been recruited as a jury member. The students’ luminaire prototypes will be on display at the LpS 2015 from 22 – 24 September in Bregenz, Austria.

About Acrich3

Acrich3 smart lighting solutions can interface through a wide variety of wireless networks such as WiFi and Bluetooth to control dimming, CCT, zoning and scheduling, all from the convenience of a tablet or a smart phone. Furthermore, Acrich3 products are energy and cost-efficient. The improved flicker performance of the Acrich3 premium modules with a flicker index lower than 0.12 generates an even better quality of light.
