Discussion: Lighting Flicker of LED Lighting Systems

Flicker is the modulation of a lamp’s light output caused by fluctuations of the mains voltage supply. Recent research has shown that fluctuations of short wavelength emissions are perceived to a higher extent and light flicker may have a huge influence on the well-being of end users. Prof. Georges Zissis, Head of Light & Matter Research Group at the LAPLACE Université de Toulouse presents and discusses the influence of driver topologies, research results, metrics and standards.

This is a comment from a reader to the article in LpR#54:

I’m a bit confused about the article about flicker.
On the one hand, there is a conclusion that says Flicker with higher frequency than 400Hz should be avoided. But the another conclusion says that flicker below 400Hz is not harmless.
So this very confusing. Or is there a wrong conclusion in the article? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I am sorry for possible confusion. I have made the statement as clear as possible.

This is how it is: (above 100Hz:)
up to 400 Hz: There is some evidence that Flicker is possibly dangerous in some applications and should be avoided.

above 400 Hz: No research data available that allows to judge if a possible danger exists or not.

It would be interesting to know details about the VLC modulations (amplitudes and frequencies) and how they are fitting into the borders mentioned by Walter.

We've just added two charts about flicker from Philips. They have presented it at the L+B last week.
