DOE Announces Selections for SSL Manufacturing R&D (Round 3) Funding Opportunity

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced the competitive selection of three projects for solid-state lighting (SSL), in response to the SSL Manufacturing R&D funding opportunity announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0000561. The two-year projects will focus on achieving significant cost reductions while maintaining quality by improving manufacturing equipment, processes, or monitoring techniques. Total DOE funding for the three projects is $7.1 million and leverages an additional $5 million in private-sector funding from the three companies. Read more »

JEDEC Publishes First International Thermal Testing Standards for LEDs

JEDEC Solid State Technology Association, the global leader in the development of standards for the microelectronics industry, today announced the publication of a new series of standards for component level testing of high-brightness/power LEDs. Development within JEDEC’s JC-15 Committee involved LED industry leaders, and resulted in the new JESD51-5x series of standards aimed at thermal characterization of power LED components. Power Integrations announced a verdict reached in the company's 2008 patent-infringement lawsuit against Fairchild Semiconductor. After a three-week trial in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, a jury found that Fairchild infringes two Power Integrations patents. DOE Releases Life-Cycle Energy Consumption Report - Incandescence vs. Fluorescent vs. LED Lamps

Compared to CFLs and Incandescent iamps, today's LED lamps clearly use most energy in the manufacturing process, but the life-cycle energy consumption is on par with CFLs and 1/4 of incandescent lamps. Until 2015, LED lamps are expected to half the life-cycle consumption again The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has published a report comparing the energy consumed over the entire life cycle for LED lamps, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and incandescent lamps.
