Luminus Enters UV-C LED Disinfection and Sterilization Segment with Two 280 nm Emitters Luminus Devices, Inc., has expanded its ultraviolet (UV) LED portfolio with two new 280 nm devices intended for the medical and health and well-being product segments. The standard footprint 3535 surface mount emitter is a 350 mA device with peak output up to 60 mW. The second ultra-compact emitter is 1.3 mm by 1.3 mm and only 0.85 mm tall; it delivers 3 mW at 20 mA and peak output of 11 mW at 100 mA. Read more »

Osram Adds Six New High-Power Infrared LEDs to Its Oslon Black Family Osram Opto Semiconductors is expanding its Oslon Black family for the infrared range with six new automotive IREDs. The 850 nm versions are intended for exterior applications such as night vision, pedestrian protection, pre-field recognition and lane detection. The new 940 nm versions are suitable above all for interior automotive applications such as driver monitoring, seat occupancy detection and gesture recognition. Thanks to different wavelengths and lenses these products cover a wide range of customer requirements and can be operated at up to 5 A in pulsed mode. Read more »

“UV Power” Research Project Is Working on LED-Replacements for Conventional UV Light Sources Since February 2017, a total of five research institutes and companies have been working on “UV Power”, a collaborative project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The partners have made it their goal to provide high-power UV LEDs to cover a wide variety of applications. These LEDs will eventually replace conventional UV light sources, which often contain toxic mercury, in areas such as production, disinfection, the environment, life sciences and medicine. New Infrared LED from Osram for 2D Facial Recognition Smartphones, tablets and the like can now be unlocked in very different ways: with a password, fingerprint scan or even an iris scan. 2D facial recognition is another method and involves illuminating the user’s face with an infrared light source and capturing the image with an IR camera. The system then compares the image with the images previously stored for the purposes of identification, focusing on characteristic two-dimensional features. If there is a match for the various data such as the width of the mouth, length of the nasal ridge and distance between the eyes then the device will be unlocked. Read more »

Unique Project for Developing Mass Market UV LEDs for Disinfection Eco-friendly purification of water – UV light is already being used to kill water-borne germs but the light sources used for this purpose are still predominantly mercury vapor lamps. UV LEDs have so far proved unattractive for reasons of cost. The aim of the UNIQUE project funded by the Bavarian Ministry for Economic Affairs, Media, Energy and Technology is therefore to develop high-power UV LEDs for industrial use.
