EPIC has signed a contract with market research and consultancy firm TEMATYS for carrying out an in-depth market and technology report of photonics technologies used in cars and for its manufacturing. With the rise of LEDs as the future lighting technology, the relatively stable lighting industry faces many changes and challenges. One of the main challenges is the ever increasing speed of transitions, something already seen in the semiconductor business. Standardization organizations are facing similar challenges. On the one hand they should define standards that will last as long as possible and on the other hand the standards need to be as clear and precise as possible. Martina Paul, Secretary General of the most important standardization body, the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) was invited to the Tech-Talks BREGENZ to discuss these topics. GaN-on-Silicon Substrate Patent Investigation - Knowmade & Yole See More Players on the Playground
GaN-on-Si technology appeared naturally as an alternative to GaN-on-Sapphire—the main stream technology for LED applications. Today, despite potential cost benefits, the mass adoption of GaN-on-Si technology for LED applications remains unclear. Most major LED makers have a patenting activity related to GaN-on-Si technology, but so far, few have made it the core of their strategy and technology roadmap. Contrary to the LED industry, we expect GaN-on-Si to be widely adopted by Power Electronics and RF applications because of its lower cost and CMOS compatibility. Read more »
