Universal Display Purchases Fujifilm’s Worldwide OLED Patent Portfolio for $105 Million
Universal Display Corporation, the leading OLED patent licensor and supplier of materials and technologies for energy-efficient OLED displays and lighting, and FUJIFILM Corporation, announced today that Fujifilm has sold and Universal Display has purchased the entire worldwide patent portfolio of more than 1,200 OLED patents and patent applications of Fujifilm for $105 million. Toshiba to Start Mass Production of White GaN-on-Si Based LEDs
Toshiba Corporation today announced that it will start mass production of white light-emitting diode (LED) on a production line that the company will construct in the 200mm wafer facility at Kaga Toshiba Electronics Co. 200 mm GaN-on-Si Wafer-Development at Azzurro Receives Local Government Support
Azzurro Semiconductors AG’s development of next generation gallium nitride on 200 mm silicon substrates is supported by the local government of Saxony. The minister for science and technology, Sabine von Schorlemer handed the official grant note to the company today. Marl Doubles LED Output in the UK with New Assembly Line Marl International has invested £150,000 to double its manufacturing output at its site in Ulverston Cumbria, putting it in a prime position to benefit from the rapid growth of an emerging ‘green’ lighting technology. The line has been specially modified to handle PCB boards of up to 600mm long, much more than the standard length. Such boards are commonly required to replace conventional lighting products. The announcement brings the investment made by Marl in its UK manufacturing facility to £270,000 altogether. Read more »

The U.S. Department of Energy has announced the competitive selection of three projects for solid-state lighting (SSL), in response to the SSL Manufacturing R&D funding opportunity announcement (FOA) DE-FOA-0000561. These two-year projects will focus on achieving significant cost reductions while maintaining quality by improving manufacturing equipment, processes, or monitoring techniques. Osram Expands with New LED Assembly Plant in China Osram AG has signed a contract with the Wuxi New District Administrative Commit-tee to build a new assembly plant in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. LED chips will be packaged in housings at the new backend facility starting in late 2013; with the Regensburg and Penang (frontend) plants exclusively continuing to make the actual LED chips. "The new assembly plant will improve our access to the world's largest single market in the lighting industry," said Aldo Kamper, CEO of the Osram Opto Semiconductors business unit.
