Plus Opto Announces Launch of LG Chem OLED Lighting Range Plus Opto Ltd, The Optoelectronics Specialist, has signed the first agreement to distribute the OLED Lighting product range from market leader LG Chem, in the UK. The range includes the world’s largest commercially-available panel at 320x320 mm and – an industry first – a flexible OLED panel on plastic substrate with a bend radius of 30 mm. Panels are available in 3000 K and 4000 K colour temperatures. Epistar Promotes Co-Activation Service Model
Competition in the LED market has been heating up with China-based LED firms aggressively integrating the whole supply chain vertically from chips to packaging to modules. China-based firms are able to provide one-stop-shop services and use low-price strategies to expand their presence in the LED application market. This is negatively impacting Taiwan’s LED makers, especially small- and medium-size packaging and module firms, who are experiencing shrinking market share. Against this backdrop, Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Epistar began promoting Co-activation Service Model three years ago hoping to turn the tide by teaming up with Taiwan-based packaging and module firms. NXP Semiconductors N.V. and Freescale Semiconductor, Ltd. today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which NXP will merge with Freescale in a transaction which values the combined enterprise at just over $40 billion1. Epistar Acquires 94% of TSMC SSL from TSMC and Subsidiary
Epistar Corp. and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC ) held Board of Directors’ meetings today and approved a sale of TSMC Solid State Lighting (TSMC SSL) shares. Epistar will acquire all shares of TSMC SSL held by TSMC and TSMC’s subsidiary TSMC Guang Neng Investment Ltd. for NT$825 million, or NT$1.46 per share. After the transaction, Epistar will own 94% of the company, and TSMC will completely exit TSMC SSL. The company will be operated by Epistar and TSMC SSL’s current team. Read more »

Private Equity Company Ratos Acquires LEDiL
Ratos has signed an agreement to acquire approximately 67% of the shares in the Finnish LED optics company Ledil Oy from the company's founders. The purchase price (enterprise value) for 100% of the company amounts to EUR 97m, of which Ratos will provide equity of approximately EUR 50m. Ledil is a leading global player in secondary optics (lenses which focus light from a source to achieve a desired lighting solution) for LED lighting. The company started in 2002 and is owned today by the two founders and Ledil's CEO. Ratos is acquiring approximately 67% of the company and the founders and other key people will own approximately 33%. Read more »
