Challenges when Designing LED-Based Illumination Systems in Medical Applications and Diagnostics
LEDs have become indispensable in medical technology and dentistry. But the requirements placed on these lighting products are very high: Minimized size, high, application specific color rendering index, efficient temperature management, usability and excellent disinfection opportunities are all extremely important. Prof. Paola Belloni from the Steinbeis Transfer Center Illumination Optics and Lighting Engineering and Furtwangen University, and Alexander Gärtner from the Faculty of Mechanical and Medical Engineering of the Furtwangen University discuss the requirements for different applications such as endoscopy, surgeries, dental devices, and photodynamic therapy. Further topics are the development of a self-disinfecting operation interface with edge-lit UV-A LEDs, and a new optimization approach, taking into account the reflection and absorption properties of human tissues.

GaN-on-Silicon Substrate Patent Investigation - Knowmade & Yole See More Players on the Playground
GaN-on-Si technology appeared naturally as an alternative to GaN-on-Sapphire—the main stream technology for LED applications. Today, despite potential cost benefits, the mass adoption of GaN-on-Si technology for LED applications remains unclear. Most major LED makers have a patenting activity related to GaN-on-Si technology, but so far, few have made it the core of their strategy and technology roadmap. Contrary to the LED industry, we expect GaN-on-Si to be widely adopted by Power Electronics and RF applications because of its lower cost and CMOS compatibility.

Tech-Talks BREGENZ - Prof. Christian Cajochen, Univ. Basel, Head of Center of Chronobiology
Human Centric Lighting has become a catchphrase used by industry and the press. But the press has also started reporting that research emphasizes the danger of LED lighting in connection to our health and has coined the term “Blue Light Hazard”. These claims have caused confusion amongst end users and throughout the lighting community. Prof. Christian Cajochen, Head of the Centre for Chronobiology at the University of Basel - an expert on this topic - held a lecture at the LpS 2016 entitled “Light Beyond Vision”. Afterwards, LED professional seized the opportunity to talk to him personally and get some in-depth information about the risks and benefits of LED lighting.

LpS 2016 - The Leading European Lighting Conference Forecasts Further Transformations
The sixth LED professional Symposium +Expo opened its doors on September 20th, in Bregenz, Austria. About 1,500 lighting professionals and over 100 exhibitors took part in Europe’s foremost lighting conference and exhibition. Experts from academia and industry, including Prof. Shuji Nakamura, Nobel Laureate in Physics 2014, discussed cutting edge findings and explored new technologies and applied them to business models and use cases in applications. The conversion of lighting, which started with LED and OLED light sources, will continue with new technologies such as communication tools and IoT. The LpS 2016 also showed that lighting will be transformed into specific solutions for things such as Horticulture Lighting, Automotive Lighting and Indoor and Outdoor Lighting. Smart Technologies for Lighting Innovations, the motto of the LpS 2016, conveyed the key aspects for new lighting solutions – building synergies between devices, algorithms and usages.

LED Lamps Recycling Technology for a Circular Economy
While having a long propagated lifetime, LED lighting products, especially lamps, have a foreseeable end of life. And since they contain many valuable elements they practically beg to be recycled. However, like other highly integrated electronics products recycling is not a simple task. Andrea Gassmann, Jörg Zimmermann, Roland Gauß, Rudolf Stauber and Oliver Gutfleisch from the Fraunhofer Project Group Materials Recycling and Resource Strategies IWKS and the Technische Universität Darmstadt Institute for Materials Science respectively, present and discuss a method that could open the way to successful recirculation of precious components and materials.

The transition from traditional lighting technology to LED is old news. People in the lighting business no longer talk about the “LED Revolution”. Today’s revolution, perhaps spurred on by LED technology, is in building automation and lighting controls. Lighting experts know that while LED products have the potential to achieve terawatts of power savings worldwide over the next decade, even larger power savings might be achieved through effective lighting control and building automation systems. LpS 2015 Post Show Report: Trends, Technologies and Solutions
Since the biggest cutting edge developments in LED technology have already taken place, one would think that a technology-focused event would be obsolete. However, that is not the case! The LED professional Symposium +Expo (LpS 2015) showed that developments in the lighting industry aren’t slowing down. New user requirements demand a shift from a component-based view to a system perspective. At sixty lectures and seven workshops, international experts presented their findings and analyzed future trends and technologies. A total of about 1,400 attendees from all over the world came to the event, which took place from September 22nd to 24th in Bregenz, Austria.
