On the Standardization of Thermal Characterization of LEDs
On the Standardization of Thermal Characterization of LEDs Unlike two decades ago in the IC world, the junction temperature (Tj) of an LED is not just a performance indicator of the thermal design but also plays a major role in lighting design since many properties of the light output of an LED depend on the absolute junction temperature. This means that thermal management should be an integral part of the system design of an LED based lighting solution, resulting in changing roles of different engineering disciplines in the overall design process - as will be discussed later in more detail. Project Connected Home over IP Connectivity Standard Developing Into Reality
Project Connected Home over IP Connectivity Standard Developing Into Reality When we set out in December 2019 to create a unifying standard for the smart home industry, there was naturally a lot of excitement — and of course, questions. Would this global consortium truly be able to bring this new standard to market? How long would it take? What products would actually emerge? Would we be able to pull off our promise to unify a fragmented industry under a single connectivity standard that would help companies focus on creating experiences over "plumbing"? Read more »

Standardization of Performance Criteria for LED Luminaires
This guiding paper is intended to help bring clarity by introducing a universal set of quality criteria that are recently described in two IEC/PAS documents. As a user of LED luminaires it is important to apply the same set of standardised and therefore comparable quality criteria when evaluating manufacturer’s claims. Users of LED luminaires should always ask for LED luminaire specifications measured in compliance with the new IEC/PAS documents. Read more »

Visual Appearance: Perception, Measurement and Metrics
Visual Appearance: Perception, Measurement and Metrics Visual appearance is one of the most critical parameters affecting customer choice and needs in products. We use the response from our visual sense to process the complex patterns of light around us into objects, space, location and movement, and from that information, we make judgments leading to a particular course of action. For example, how we perceive the visual appearance of a product may cause us to buy it, reject it or even write to complain about it. We may choose to buy a particular food because its appearance suggests freshness. Our choice of car may have been influenced because its glossy appearance made us think of quality and prestige. Alternatively, we may reject a particular surface finish because its appearance suggested poor quality and the presence of defects. All of these examples represent judgments made on appearance.
